go to the Hallsville Hallsville Chamber of Commerce |
Hallsville Area President Lorry Meyers called the meeting to order at the Hallsville Community Center. There were about 30 members and guests present. The minutes of the May 2007 were approved as received. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOHN SCHLOOT: John said that the community needs to realize that the Hallsville Chamber is not a civic club. The direction of the Chamber is to promote the town and make it socially and economically viable. He said that to encourage greater member participation in monthly meetings, occasional meetings may be held in the evenings. He said that RSVP’s for lunch attendance are no longer being taken. Food service will start at 11:45 to allow more time for programs. He announced several upcoming programs including the C. O. L. T. railroad, library issues, elected officials, Hallsville Schools Superintendent, Tom Baugh, MODOT, and Larry Moore and Jim Bunton for the City of Hallsville. John also reported on his attendance at the Chamber Retreat held at the Lake of the Ozarks last month. His take-away message was that although Hallsville has a ready labor force, the community needs to offer ready-to-go real estate sites with sewers and other improvements. He said that economic development is ultimately real estate development with sites called “employment centers” rather than industrial parks. He announced the upcoming Mid-Missouri Economic Summit to be held June 29, 2007 and had handouts available for interested members. RECOGNITION OF NEW MEMBERS: Lorry recognized new members Triple Wonders Photography (Darla Harmon), RBS Lynk (Griff Gresham) and Rental Development (Harold Reisch). BUSINESS OF THE MONTH: – Lorry recognized Mid-State Petroleum as the June 2007 business of the month. RIBBON CUTTING FOR THE NEW OPTIMIST PARK: Lorry said that a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Hallsville Optimist park will be scheduled in the near future. CONCERT IN THE PARK: Mayor Carl South announced a free Concert in the Park on June 9, 2007, sponsored by Wax Lips and Sassafras Moon World Gifts to benefit the food bank. HERITAGE DAYS: Nancy Franklin requested help carrying the Chamber banner in the Heritage Days parade. Requests for donations of goods, services and cash for the Heritage Days Business Showcase raffle and a sign-up sheet to man the booth were passed around to members. (2) June 4, 2007 PROGRAM: The program was presented by Bernie Andrews, David Meyer and Dave Griggs of REDI. Andrews reported that the REDI mission is to attract primary employers, which include manufacturing, life sciences research and data centers. He said communities must have ready sites and provide incentives through such programs as Chapter 100 bonds. Meyers said that three of REDI’s current projects involve attracting a distribution center, a food processor and a data center. Griggs talked about the type of incentives that could be provided while still maintaining a high level of funding to the local schools. Representative Steve Hobbs said, “Don’t limit the type of tax abatement. Have all local taxing entities to the table, then it will work very smoothly. Respectfully submitted, Barb Corwin, Secretary
